Auto-text contacts when you miss a call
Automatically send an SMS when a call goes unanswered, and let your AI agent handle the text conversation that follows.
Missed Call Text Back sends an automatic SMS to any caller whose call goes unanswered. Instead of losing the lead, the caller receives an immediate text response — and if your Centerfy AI agent is active with the proper tags, the conversation continues with AI-powered replies. This turns every missed call into a live text conversation.
Set up Missed Call Text Back
- Open Phone Number settings
Navigate to Phone Numbers in the sidebar. Select the phone number you want to configure.
- Open Voicemail & Missed Call settings
Locate the Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back section in the phone number configuration.
- Enable Missed Call Text Back
Toggle Missed Call Text Back to on. This activates the auto-text feature for this number.
- Compose your response message
Write the SMS message that callers receive when their call goes unanswered. Keep it short, helpful, and action-oriented — for example:
“Hi! Sorry we missed your call. How can we help you? Reply here and we’ll get back to you right away.”
- Save your settings
Click Save to activate the feature. The auto-text starts working immediately for all missed calls on this number.
Connect AI-powered responses
The auto-text message gets the conversation started, but the real power comes when your AI agent takes over the reply thread.
- Ensure your AI agent is configured
Your AI chat agent must be set up with a system prompt, knowledge base, and tools for SMS conversations.
- Apply the correct Active Tag
The contact must have the appropriate Active Tag (for example,
smschat_ai) applied. Use a workflow to auto-apply this tag when a missed call is detected, or apply it based on the contact’s pipeline stage. - Test the full flow
Call your number and let it go to voicemail. Verify that the auto-text is sent, then reply to it and confirm that the AI agent picks up the conversation.
Best practices
- Keep the initial text short — one or two sentences that invite a reply. The AI handles the rest.
- Include your business name — callers may not recognize the number, so identify yourself in the auto-text.
- Set expectations — let callers know they can reply via text and will get an immediate response.
- Pair with voicemail — enable voicemail on the same number so callers have both options: leave a message or text back.
Does this work with Twilio-imported numbers?
Yes. Missed Call Text Back works with any number configured in your Centerfy account, including numbers imported via Twilio SIP trunking.
Can I customize the message per number?
Yes. Each phone number has its own Missed Call Text Back configuration. You can set different messages for different numbers — for example, a sales line might have a different message than a support line.
What if the caller is already a contact with an Active Tag?
The auto-text sends regardless. If the contact already has an Active Tag, the AI agent automatically handles any replies to the missed call text, continuing the conversation seamlessly.
Will the auto-text fire if the call is answered?
No. The text only sends when the call goes unanswered — if someone picks up, no text is sent.
